How to invest in the global energy transition

Companies must invest more in renewable energy and clean power generation for a net-zero carbon economy by 2050. This creates a big investment opportunity during the global energy transition.

The Food of Tomorrow

The food that feeds the world is changing—dramatically. And this profound transformation of our global food ecosystem is creating, in our view, great opportunities for investors today.

Sustainability at this event

During the Sustainability & Impact Summit, we are taking the opportunity to showcase innovations and initiatives shared with us by some of our attendees and speakers today.

J.P. Morgan Bee Hotels

In May 2023, J.P. Morgan Asset & Wealth Management installed their very first beehive on the rooftop of our 60 Victoria Embankment office. Partnering with a specialist provider of urban beekeeping services, our newest 15,000 'employees' have been settling into their new home and have been busy working on pollinating the surrounding gardens and green spaces (up to 5 miles away!), making a huge contribution to local urban biodiversity in the process.

We will track the health of our busy bees over time, providing fascinating insights into what they're eating and the local ecology of the City of London. In time, they will even produce delicious J.P. Morgan honey that we will use in our food and beverage offerings for both internal and external events.

Initiatives like these transform urban environments into a welcoming home for wild bees, encouraging biodiversity in the City of London and taking the sting out of the longstanding decline of wildflower meadows in the UK.

JPMorgan Chase Global Headquarters

JPMorgan Chase's new state-of-the-art global headquarters is a 60-story skyscraper, designed by Foster + Partners. It will be New York City's largest all-electric tower with net zero operational emissions and exceptional indoor air quality that exceeds the highest standards in sustainability, health, and wellness. It will help define the modern workplace with 21st century infrastructure, smart technology and 2.5 million square feet of flexible and collaborative space that can easily adapt to the future of work.

In addition to operating on net zero carbon emissions, the building will use state-of-the-art building technology and systems to ensure it operates as efficiently as possible, including:

  • Intelligent building technology that uses sensors, AI, and machine learning systems to predict, respond and adapt to energy needs.
  • Advanced water storage and reuse systems to reduce water usage by more than 40%.
  • Triple pane glazing on the façade and automatic solar shades connected to HVAC systems for greater energy efficiency.
  • Outdoor terraces featuring natural green space and plantings.

The firm also recycled, reused, or upcycled 97% of the building materials from the demolition, far exceeding the 75% requirement of the leading green building standard.

Notpla

Winners of The Earthshot Prize in 2022, in the category of 'Build a Waste-Free World', Notpla's packaging material is made from seaweed and plants that disappear naturally.

Throughout the day, Notpla refreshments will be available in the networking space in the form of edible bubbles to provide hydration on the go, replacing the need for single-use plastic cups and bottles for liquids.

Notpla Coating has many of the same grease and water-resistant qualities of traditional coatings used in takeaway food packaging but is made from seaweed, not plastic! At the end of the event, please feel free to take some sustainably created petit fours along with you in fully biodegradable Notpla boxes.

RedSea

RedSea has developed a range of technologies to support large scale food systems while mitigating the impact of high temperatures and water scarcity. This includes the iyris | SecondSky transparent heat blocking roofs which utilize a unique new nanomaterial to let the light plants need to grow in, whilst absorbing excess heat.

This in turn saves water as plants transpire less and greenhouses need less cooling, thus producing more yield from happier plants and creating a better, more productive working environment.

This is a simple change to adopt as the nano material additive requires no change to roofing manufacturing processes.

Check out their mini greenhouses in the showcase today.

Blue Marine Foundation

Blue Marine's mission is to see at least 30% of the world's ocean under effective protection by 2030 and the other 70% managed in a responsible way.

They work using a combination of top-down intervention to improve governance of our seas and bottom-up project delivery to help local communities who are at the front line of ocean conservation.

We have an interactive touch screen in the networking space to enable you to explore beneath the waves and see the impact that our choices and lifestyles are having on the ocean.

Event materials

Carbon offsetting the event

We are offsetting carbon footprint of all internal and external attendees and speakers. This is calculated using the point of origin of their travel and their method of transport.

Lanyards/name badges

The lanyards are made from recycled plastic found in the oceans and are reused for other events. The name cards are printed on recycled paper stock that is then further recycled post event.

Pads & pens

The notepads that are available on request from the registration desk are 100% recycled and 100% recyclable. They are made in the UK.

The pens are made from recycled plastic and in a factory focused on minimizing their waste and CO2 emissions by using electrical energy produced by climate-friendly hydro-electricty.

Ipads and Stands

Providing a few of these dotted around the H2 networking spaces with relevant marketing material and reports uploaded for guests to review so that we avoid excessive printing for the purposes of the event.

Flowers

The flowers are supplied by FLOWERBX which is a company with sustainability is at the heart of it's business model. Traditional florists hold large volumes of flowers in stock to fulfil potential orders, generating considerable wastage. Under their cut-to-order model, they buy flowers specifically to fulfil order requests, so the waste is significantly lower than other brands. They strive to deliver beauty while trading ethically and sustainably.

FLOWERBX is currently in the final phase for B Corp certification and have been 100% carbon neutral since 2022.

F&B

By scanning the QR code attendees can find full details of the menu for the event. Please see below for a key points:

  • All menus feature locally sourced and carbon-rated food and beverages
  • Recycling and food waste reduction programs will be in place, with excess food donated to the local community
  • Elimination of single-use plastics in any event aspects including room amenities
  • Green and garden salads from hydroponic farming
  • All coffee served will be brewed with organic beans from female-owned farms and roasted in the U.
Breakfast

Zero waste tropical fruit smoothies (made from leftover breakfast fruit salads)

  • The UK creates 9.5 million tonnes of food waste per year, and out of that, 6.4 million tonnes is completely edible. Choose a zero waste fruit smoothie made from leftover fruit salads from yesterday's breakfast to reduce a little bit of that wasted edible food.

Coffee grounds granola, vanilla yoghurt, local honey, cranberries

  • The honey used in all dishes today is sourced from J.P. Morgan's own bee hives located on the roof of this building. Very locally sourced!

Grilled no waste sourdough, Kent hazelnut butter

  • The hazelnut butter in this dish is from Kent, UK. When you eat locally, you support English farmers and food producers, and reduce the mileage the products have travelled to get to you at the same time.

Bubble and squeak waffles, roast wild mushroom

  • Wild mushrooms are a diverse group of organisms that can help tackle global challenges, including climate change and hunger, both relevant at this summit and at lunch time. Edible mushrooms are rich in nutrients such as vitamin B, C and D, fibre and minerals. They are also high in protein and very climate friendly, hence a great substitute for meat.
Morning Break

Potato skin crisps

  • Potatoes are one of the most wasted foods in the UK, and potato skins belong to the edible waste. Potatoes also have a very low carbon footprint, so these potato skin crisps are a 2-in-1!

Poached orchard fruit, chia seeds, spiced honey

  • The honey used in all dishes today is sourced from J.P. Morgan's own bee hives located on the roof of this building. Very locally sourced!

Yesterday's croissant and butter pudding bites

  • Bread is one of the most commonly wasted food items in the UK. It is estimated that approximately 900,000 tonnes of bread are wasted each year, both at the production and consumer levels. One way to tackle this is to use up bread that has gone stale instead of throwing it away. Like in this dish! Give yesterday's bread a chance!
Lunch

Cold

Beetroot cured Chalk Stream trout

Squash, pickled onion, Harvest London leaf salad, grain mustard and local honey dressing

  • Trout has a relatively low carbon footprint due to it being a coastal fish. The carbon footprint is higher for fishes caught off-coast due to the required fuel and refrigerant use. Therefore, trout is a more climate-friendly choice!

Pickled leeks

English apple, rainbow kale, quinoa

  • Plant-based dishes usually have a low carbon footprint and environmental impact. The kale, leeks, and apples in this dish are also from Berkshire, meaning this dish is both climate friendly and locally sourced – does it get any better than that?

Hot

Hodmedod chickpea tagine

Braised grains, preserved fruits, pomegranate

  • Want to eat foods that are high in protein and low in carbon? Try this tasty chickpea tagine! A diet rich in peas, pulses and nuts can be incredibly low-carbon. Producing 100g of protein from peas emits just 0.4kg of CO2e. This is almost 90 times less than getting the same amount of protein from beef.

Grilled Mackerel

Hampshire Watercress, artichoke, heritage potato

  • Mackerel is one of the most climate friendly fishes you can eat, and has a much lower carbon footprint compared to haddock and cod. This is because haddock and cod are found near the bottom of the water bodies and therefore require higher fuel than pelagic species (i.e., herring and mackerel that dwell in the open sea).

Bronze leg turkey

Pear, celeriac, pickled beets, chestnut

  • The turkey in this dish is from Essex, meaning locally sourced. Compared to other meats, turkey has a lower carbon footprint, just slightly higher than chicken and pork. If you want to eat meats with a lower carbon footprint, choose chicken, turkey, or pork that all have significantly lower emissions than both beef and lamb.
Dessert

Vegan Eton mess, foraged berries, oat milk cream

  • Oat milk's carbon footprint is 3.7 times lower than regular milk, meaning this vegan Eton mess is almost 4 times more climate friendly than its regular alternative!

Vegetable peeling cake (carrot and Parsnip)

  • Vegetables are one of the most wasted foods in the UK, and vegetable peeling belongs to the edible waste. Vegetables also have a very low carbon footprint, so this vegetable peeling cake is a 2-in-1!

Local honey and cinnamon Chantilly

  • The honey used in all dishes today is sourced from J.P. Morgan's own bee hives located on the roof of this building. Very locally sourced!

Petit four selection 3 types

  • Finish this climate friendly meal on a zero-waste high with these petit fours created from leftovers!

Sustainability at J.P. Morgan

In recognition of the environmental impact of hosting this event, we're purchasing carbon credits to offset participant travel and venue emissions.

How is the Sustainability & Impact Summit going to be sustainable?

  • All menus will feature locally-sourced and carbon-rated food and beverages
  • Recycling and food waste reduction programs will be in place, with excess food donated to the local community
  • Menus will be printed on seeded paper, which attendees can take home to plant
  • Elimination of single-use plastics in any event aspects including room amenities
  • Water savings on in-room linens green policy
  • Green and garden salads from hydroponic farming
  • All coffee served will be brewed with organic beans from female-owned farms and roasted in the U.K.

Highlights of JPMorgan Chase's climate action

  • Maintain carbon neutral operations
  • Source renewable energy for 100% of our global power needs
  • Signed long-term agreements to purchase over $200 million in high-quality, durable1 carbon dioxide removals
  • Target to finance and facilitate $2.5 trillion over ten years to advance sustainable development, including $1 trillion to support climate action and other green initiatives
  • Target to reduce Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 40% by 2030 vs. a 2017 baseline
  • Target to reduce global water use by 20% by 2030 vs. a 2017 baseline
  • Target to satisfy at least 70% of our renewable energy goal with on-site renewable energy and off-site, long-term renewable energy contracts by 2025
